Founded in 1985
Mission: to provide hot meals to residents of Lexington who, due to illness or disability, are unable to provide for themselves.
Meals for Shut-Ins (President, H. Thomas Williams).
Hot meals are provided, five days a week year-round, to shut-ins. We get referrals from medical and social service organizations.
We are currently delivering between 35 and 40 hot meals daily.
We partner with Virginia Program for Aging Services, who provides similar services for residents of Buena Vista and Glasgow.
We rely on volunteer drivers, who commit one hour (11:15 to 12:15) one day a week to pick up meals at Stonewall Jackson Hospital where they are prepared, and deliver them to one of our five delivery routes.
For the benefit it provides to the meals’ recipients, providing nutrition as well as a chance to remain in the home rather than enter institutional living.
The most rewarding moments moments come in interacting with meal recipients as I deliver their lunch.
